This is track 74 in Andy Cockroft's "4WD North Island" book. It runs along the ridge-line of the northern end of the Tararuas between the Pahiatua track and the Manawatu Gorge.

Since the book was written, I suspect that the "entertaining muddy bogs" Andy refers to have deepend a bit - on a recent trip we had to winch and strop all but three of the vehicles through the one below!

What is it about mud anyway? What's the big attraction?
My theory is that, when it comes to 4wd'ing, a decent bit of mud provides a challenge for the driver and entertainment for the bystanders.
