Club Activities The Wellington Cross Country Vehicle Club is one of the larger and more active 4WD clubs in New Zealand with around 250 members. Club activities are planned and co-ordinated by an enthusiastic and capable committee. Regular club activities include:
Trips are generally graded to suit driver experience and vehicle types: from back road touring (on public roads) through novice/family/shiny 4wd vehicle trips (easy going, little risk of damage) to hard yakka (hard going, greater experience required, a bit more than a few paint scratches expected!). All trips offer a great way to get out into the wilds, often to places that are off limits to free public access. Backroad Touring and Family Shiny class trips are open to prospective members. Vehicle Requirements: Trips advertised as "Touring Class" do not require a low ratio gearbox as these trips are designed for the "soft" SUV type vehicle. All Wheel Drive (AWD) or Four Wheel Drive (4WD) is however required. For "Family Shiny and harder trips" all vehicles must have 4WD and a low-ratio option in their gearbox. We have found that 4WD cars and vans are not suitable as they are prone to being damaged even on gentle trips, mainly due to their low ground clearance or instability.
| Membership Membership of the club is open to anyone with an interest in off-roading. To qualify for membership, prospective members are required to participate in at least three (3) club trips in either the "Touring" or "Family Shiny" trip classes (it may be a mix of both). This gives them a chance to find out if club membership is really for them. It also gives club members a chance to get to know them. Prospective members are welcome to attend club meetings which are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month (except January) at 7:30pm at the Naenae Bowling Club, Vogel St, Naenae. Code of Conduct The Club has developed a Code of Conduct for Members which recognises the importance of the necessary access to, and protection of, land and eco-systems. National Association The Club and its members are affiliated to the NZ Four wheel Drive Association.
ARAC The Club is a member of the Akatarawa Recreational Access Committee (Inc), an Incorporated charitable society which negotiates land access on behalf of various user groups. See www.arac.org.nz
